What is one of the most important traits a leader needs to have?
Having worked alongside and coached many business leaders over the years, I can clearly see a trend of what makes a leader successful. The secret is their focus. Where do you spend your time and energy?
There are only so many hours in the day and a limited amount of “brainpower” so how you manage that limited resource is critical to achieving great things. There are two main drivers to focus and they are: decisions and delegation.
With decisions, as a leader you need to decide what to say yes to and what to say no to. It is so important to say no to as much as possible and stay in your areas of strength. Many leaders are smart, hardworking, and capable of doing almost anything they put their minds to. The question is, should you do something just because you can? As a leader, you need to say “no” a lot to stay focused on what is truly important and where you can make the most impact.
This brings me to the second driver of focus, delegation. So, for all the things you say “no” to it still has to be done by someone. As a leader, if you do a great job of delegating the work to others and being clear about the expectations, then you and your organization will be able to accomplish so much more than if you did it yourself.
When you free yourself from taking on too much, you can focus on what is truly important: leading the team to growth and prosperity.
